In the beginning

Experience Design, Real-time Visuals, Creative Coding

April 2024

In the beginning is an interactive and multi-person visual experience inspired by the infinite worlds created by novels and choose-your-own-adventure games. This experience asks the user to dive into their understanding of the world around them and then choose their own path accordingly.

It uses a real time visualization, projection mapping, and a data gathering system custom built with TouchDesigner. Users follow a series of prompts that appear on the projections in the space and submit their choices on their own mobile devices. Additionally, it uses a WebSocket server connected to a custom website as the base for user input and interaction. All visual and audio elements are closely connected to the data and will update live according to what stage the experience is at and what choice the users make.

Logline

In the beginning is an experience that requires the formation of connections between the user and their imagination, the tone of the space around them, and the universe that they reside in. This experience asks the user to dive into their understanding of the world around them and then choose their own path accordingly. It wants users to look past what they believe is true but instead at the what-ifs of the universe. What if the universe began with light, overwhelming brightness? What if the first beings discovered fear before courage?

An individual journey among the grand path of an assembled multitude. In the beginning is a collection of lone choices that, shown together, begin to create a magnificent world.

Main Projection

The main projection showcases the questions and narrative as well as the "world" that is built by the audience's choices. The visuals are automated to change depending on the option that the audience chooses.

Sub Projections

The sub projections show alongside the main projection (on separate screens) when the audience is answering the questions. The question that the audience is on determines the projection visual.
